Adoxaceae.
Elder flowers have an elegant floral and grassy scent.
Elderberries have a bitter, astringent taste, and, like the flowers, are mildly poisonous when eaten raw.
Flowers are delicate white, blooming between late May and early June. At the end of the summer, these blooms will have transformed into clusters of small, purple-black berries.
The aroma of elder is well known to repel flies, however it is also associated with ill-fortune and bad spirits. In many cultures, to burn elder logs is to invite the devil into your home.
