Red Clover

Trifolium pratense

Bright, with floral violet notes.

Mildly sweet, particularly the flowers.

A perennial plant to about 40cm that is in peak bloom from May to early July. The flowers look like pink or pinkish- purple pompoms made up of many individual florets.

This is the species of the famous four-leaf clover. Legend has it that Eve carried a four-leaf clover with her when expelled from the Garden of Eden, so it represents a small piece of paradise on earth. The chances of finding a four- leaf clover are estimated at 10,000 to 1 (so there has to be at least one in a bottle of The Botanist somewhere!).
