What are the botanicals in The Botanist Gin?


Botanicals are the very essence of gin; its raison d’etre. The Botanist gin is made from 9 traditional gin botanicals and 22 Island botanicals, hand-picked and foraged, then weighed and prepared for each distillation. We have our own in-house foragers; the Islay botanicals are their full-time, year-round, beginning-to-end job.

Why do Botanicals matter?

It’s the botanicals that give The Botanist its distinctive character. The aromas that spill out as you pour the gin come from the flowers and herbs which have been captured in the spirit through distillation.

Not all gins have so many ingredients; it’s why The Botanist is so complex and versatile.

And not all gins gain their smells and tastes through a distillation process, in which alcohols are painstakingly boiled off, bonding with the flavour molecules as they go. To us, a hugely important aspect of the botanicals is their connection to Islay. The island home of Bruichladdich Distillery, where The Botanist is made, is a microcosm of different habitats and land uses, a place highly respondent to the seasons and the weather, with unique geology and mixture of wildlife. It’s sparsely populated and has a fascinating history stretching right back to the hunter gatherers.

We pick our Islay botanicals by hand, so we can personally guarantee both the condition of the ingredients we are using, and the health of any wild populations we are picking from. There’s a strong sustainability ethic.

“My aim is to pick as little as I can from as many places as I can.” Says James Donaldson, our forager. “We’re a limited area, we’ve only got the island, so it’s imperative that we look after it. There are only 3200 of us that live here – I think we’re all tied to the land here.”
