TASTING NOTES

Delicate. Balanced. Complex. The experience of drinking The Botanist is one-of-a-kind.

Body

Satin smooth, it glides across the palate. The viscosity of the liquid is exceptional.

Nose

Immediately a bouquet of herbal freshness, juniper and sweet citrus come to the fore. The scent of Islay botanicals gently rises, winding their wild aromas of mint, thyme, sweet gale, gorse and chamomile through the heart of the gin.

Taste

Rich and mellow, cool on entry then warming across the palate, stimulating the tastebuds with a round mouthfeel and a citrus freshness. Sweet and earthy notes combine with the floral and herbal profiles of our 22 wild Islay botanicals. Each sip reveals deeper layers and more complex combinations of delicate flavours.

Finish

Relaxed and balanced. A harmonious botanical combination is held together with a gentle, satin soft texture. The viscosity from an achingly slow distillation brings out the delicate essence of Islay.

THE GIN IS IN

"This elegantly complex gin may become your new go-to.

The equivalent of that perfectly tailored suit you can practically wear every day yet still get compliments. That's what The Botanist is. And that's why I always have a bottle in regular rotation in my home bar.

Honestly, The Botanist is best in a martini. At a generous ABV of 46%, it's just high enough to give that classic cocktail a sublime bite as long as you don't over dilute it."

FAQs

Who makes The Botanist?

The Botanist is conceived and distilled at Bruichladdich Distillery, situated on the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland. It is produced under the same roof as our three single malt brands: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore. As Progressive Hebridean Distillers, we aim to create the most thought-provoking spirits possible.

Bruichladdich Distillery Company Limited is owned by the Rémy Cointreau group.

What are the 22 different botanicals used in The Botanist?

We use apple mint, chamomile, creeping thistle, downy birch, elder, gorse, lemon balm, hawthorn, bog myrtle, sweet cicely, lady’s bedstraw, spear mint, water mint, meadowsweet, red clover, tansy, mugwort, white clover, heather, wood sage, wild thyme and a token sprig of Islay juniper. All of them are responsibly hand-foraged by our two professional foragers.

Have the same botanicals always been used to make The Botanist?

Yes, to this day the selection of 22 botanicals is the same as the one originally chosen by Jim McEwan. The Latin name of each botanical is also embossed on the front and back of our bottle.

Which cocktail is best for The Botanist Islay Dry Gin?

You can never go wrong with a simple, well-made Botanist and Tonic (we like to call it a B&T). Mix The Botanist with a quality tonic water and garnish it with a sprig of rosemary and a slice of grapefruit.

Alternatively, The Botanist is exceptional in a Dry Martini. Ensure you use a good-quality, chilled vermouth for maximum enjoyment.

Why is The Botanist bottled at 46% ABV / 92 proof?

Essential oils and aromatic compounds extracted from the 22 hand-foraged Islay botanicals and 9 classic gin botanicals bind effectively to alcohol. At 46%, the spirit holds a richer, more viscous mouthfeel than it would at a lower strength of 40% ABV / 80 proof. Furthermore, when Jim McEwan first created The Botanist, he wanted it to deliver a satin-smooth, mellow palate while still being able to stand up in cocktails.

Is The Botanist Islay Dry Gin a good gin?

The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is widely considered to be an excellent gin. It has picked up various accolades over the years since its launch in 2011, including gold medals at the World Gin Awards and the USA Spirit Ratings.

We also think it’s an exceptional gin, although some may say we’re biased…

Is The Botanist Islay Dry Gin gluten-free?

Yes, The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is gluten-free. The distillation process transforms the liquid into vapour and leaves the heavy gluten proteins behind.

What does The Botanist Islay Dry Gin pair well with?

If you’re looking to enjoy a classic, refreshing long drink then we recommend pairing The Botanist Islay Dry Gin with a high-quality tonic water and plenty of ice. Garnish it with rosemary and a slice of grapefruit for ultimate enjoyment, although if you don’t have this available then garnishing with something seasonal or whatever you have available will be fine.
